Does Constant Straightening Damage the Hair?

Hair straightening involves the appliance of heat in order to achieve a smooth flat look. Since the hair contains moisture any exposure to heat will of course dry it out and any overexposure will eventually cause the hair to become brittle and even break.

As long as preventative measures are taken and the hair is compensated for any potential damage, then there is no reason why you cannot straighten your hair on a regular basis. Because heat dries the hair it is necessary to replace any moisture that is lost. This can be achieved by using specific moisturising conditioners either beforehand or after straightening. A daily leave-in conditioner is recommended in the case where the hair is submitted to heat on an everyday basis along with a deep nourishing moisturiser to be used weekly.

In addition to a good shampoo and conditioner you need to ensure you have the correct and appropriate grooming tools. A paddle brush is recommended for detangling hair after washing. However, it is recommended that you refrain from brushing the hair when wet as this is when it is at its most vulnerable to breakages. If you are planning on using curling irons to straighten your hair, consider towel drying your hair at least for as long as possible. You can then completely dry your hair on a low temperature setting with a hair drier. This will minimise any damage caused by heat and ultimately keep your hair looking healthy.

Basic Hair Care

If we want our hair to look good and respond well to styling we need to take care of it in order to promote healthy locks. Any treatments that involve chemicals or heat can and will damage the hair if over used. Therefore the hair needs to be prepared and compensated if we want to keep it looking great.

Before opting for any radical change in our hair style such as colour, perming, straightening or even haircut it is advisable to seek advice before doing so. This may involve a trip to a reputable hair salon but it will be well worth it in the long run.

Since we all have different hair types it is no surprise that there are many different hair care products available. Recognising what type of hair you have such as normal, dry, greasy, thick, frizzy etc can help you when it comes to choosing the right products. Once this is established, there is no need to go overboard with the grooming and cleaning but regular maintenance is necessary if you are applying various styling tools on a regular basis. A weekly deep moisturising conditioner is recommended when using heating appliances and a daily leave in conditioner will protect the hair from drying out if heat is used every day.

Whenever possible give your hair a break and allow it to dry naturally as this will permit the natural oils produced from the scalp to renourish and revitalise your hair. Remember too that the hair needs a regular trim in order to help strengthen and encourage growth. As the hair grows on average 1cm per month a trip to the hairdressers should be planned approximately every 2 to 3 months.

Going Straight

With A list celebrities setting trends when it comes to hair styles it is no surprise that there is a now a huge craze for straight hair. Jennifer Aniston has to take some of the blame for her poker straight hair which was a huge hit in the late nineties. But perhaps the sleek look of straight hair has become ever popular thanks to the easy use of the world famous hair straighteners.

Straightening your hair couldn’t be simpler. Whether you want to change your look completely and transform those curls into straight sexy hair or simply flatten out those few waves, using a hand held straightening tool can help you achieve just that. It is simply a matter of plugging in the hot iron plates and working them down the length of the hair.

However, as with any hair styling, particularly those which require the appliance of heat, measures should be taken to protect and care for the hair. Before using straightening irons always condition the hair beforehand and use a salon tested and recommended moisturising spray. Minimise the temperature towards the end of use and limit the amount of times you apply heat in order to allow the hair time to recover. Over heating can lead to dry, brittle hair so precautions should be taken to prevent breakages and severe damaging on the hair.

Straightening your hair can help you achieve many a new look not to mention style and in some cases give you that extra confidence you need to feel good about yourself. Frizzy or unruly hair can also be combated by straightening but again, the use of heated styling tools should be used in conjunction with nourishing vitamin based conditioning products in order to protect and maintain an overall healthy looking head of hair.

Prevent Damage Caused By Curling Irons

When it comes to straightening your hair, particularly using curling irons for the first time, so many end up wishing they had never bothered. It is extremely important to know the basics and above all how to use hot plates on your hair.

In the first instance it is always a good idea to assess and prepare your hair. You should know if your hair is thick, thin, and curly, coloured or has had any other chemical treatment prior to straightening. Preparing the hair before using curling irons involves using a good vitamin based conditioner and even a leave in conditioner to protect the hair from drying out. You should consider using a leave in conditioner daily or a deep conditioning product at least once a week in order to restore the moisture heat styling takes out of the hair.

In addition, you should always know how much heat to apply on your hair depending on your hair type. It is strongly recommended that you test the heat level of a new appliance before even using it on the hair. A good way to do this is by using a moistened piece of tissue paper and holding it in the irons for a few seconds. If the paper becomes discoloured then you know the temperature setting is too hot and would scorch the hair causing it to burn and break off.

Another important thing to remember is that the hair must be completely dry before using curling irons. It may be a good idea to wash the hair the night before if you are pushed for time or have long, thick hair. Also you should work with small sections of hair at any one time and use a protective spray both before and after.

Greying of the Hair

Just about every woman dreads the day her hair starts going grey. Finding the first white hair can quickly be remedied by simply pulling it out but over time when this one hair is joined by several, removal is no longer an option.

Despite years of study the cause of why the hair greys cannot be determined although it has been uncovered as to why the hair loses its natural colour. Greying hair is a result of the natural aging process. In the case of hair colour, the amount of pigment produced begins to malfunction as we get older. Eventually the cells at the base of the hairs that determine the amount of pigment shut down completely and new hair then grows back completely grey or white. The precise age this happens depends on the individual but the majority of us tend to turn completely grey in our sixties.

Those who turn grey at an early age or literally overnight may have had the misfortune of a medical condition. Although this is quite rare it is indeed a recognised condition called alopecia areata. The lack of regular thicker hair being allowed to grow is the main symptom of this disease. As the thinner grey hairs are then able to grow in quicker they actually speed up the overall grey appearance of the hair.

There is no cure for greying of the hair and nothing can be done to prevent it however there are many a remedy. The most obvious is that of dying the hair and this in turn can give you the opportunity to go a completely different colour from the original. Another solution is to wear a hair piece or wig but this is not usually a popular choice amongst modern women.

How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?

Most of us are guilty of over washing our hair. It may be that the nature of our lifestyles requires a quick and simple grooming process or that we simply do not make the time to properly care for our hair. However, the hair does respond to certain conditions and over washing can leave it looking dry, brittle and even frizzy.

Depending on the hair type some of us may require a daily rinse and even shampoo. This is particularly the case with fine or thin hair or even certain short hair style. More often than not fine hair can look limp and greasy if left unwashed for two to three days. This is due to the production of natural oils produced from the scalp which serve to moisturise and nourish the hair. Some people may even suffer from an over production of sebaceous oils and therefore require rinsing their hair more frequently. In these cases it is a good idea to use a gentle shampoo that matches your hair type along with a light conditioner.

For those who have normal type hair, long, thick or curly hair then it is better to wash and rinse no more than two to three times a week. This will allow the natural oils to do their job without being stripped from the hair through over washing.

The same applies for hair that has been chemically processed either from perming or colouring. Over styling and straightening can also leave the hair dry and brittle so once again a gentle shampoo that corresponds to your hair type should be used. A good nourishing vitamin based condition should also be used in conjunction.
